- Record third-quarter orders strengthened ABB's full-year growth and margin outlook.
- Data-center demand and the Mitsubishi Electric venture expand the strategic case for Electrification.
- The joint venture is expected to close in the second half of 2027, subject to customary conditions.
ABB reported record third-quarter orders on October 20 as demand for power distribution and cooling equipment for data centers accelerated. Reuters said the Swiss engineering group also raised its full-year comparable sales outlook, while announcing a planned expansion in Asia with Mitsubishi Electric.
Record orders lift 2026 outlook
Orders rose 40 percent year over year to 12.00 billion US dollars in the three months ended September 30, according to Reuters. Data-center orders more than doubled, making the segment a central driver of demand for ABB's Electrification business.
Revenue increased 14 percent to 9.70 billion US dollars, slightly below the company-gathered consensus of 9.74 billion US dollars. Operational earnings before interest, tax and amortization climbed 24 percent to 2.03 billion US dollars and came in slightly above the 2.00 billion US dollar analyst forecast cited by Reuters.
ABB lifted its full-year comparable sales-growth outlook to the low-teens percentage range from a previous range spanning low single-digit double-digit growth to the low teens. For the fourth quarter, management expects comparable revenue growth to remain broadly similar to the third quarter, while the operational EBITA margin should soften sequentially less than in the usual seasonal pattern.
Asia expansion adds strategic option
ABB plans to spend 495 million US dollars for a 51 percent stake in a low-voltage power-distribution joint venture with Mitsubishi Electric. The transaction also gives ABB full ownership of related Mitsubishi sales operations outside Japan and includes an option to acquire full ownership of the venture in the medium term.
Chief Executive Morten Wierod said the venture should make ABB a low-voltage market leader in Japan and open access to the wider Asia-Pacific region. Completion is expected in the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
