- Abbott plans to place its Nutrition business in a separate publicly traded company by the end of 2027.
- Nutrition sales improved in the third quarter, led by pediatric products, while nine-month sales remained below the prior-year period.
- The remaining Abbott portfolio is expected to focus on medical devices, diagnostics and established pharmaceuticals.
Abbott Laboratories stock remains in focus as the company advances plans to separate its global Nutrition business into an independent, publicly traded company. The transaction is targeted for completion by the end of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, a Form 10 registration statement and final approval by Abbott's board.
The operating backdrop is mixed. Worldwide Nutrition sales rose 5.1% to USD 2.26 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to NutraIngredients. For the first nine months, however, Nutrition sales fell 1.3% from the same period a year earlier.
Growth accelerated across the portfolio during the quarter. Pediatric Nutrition sales increased 8.8% to USD 1.06 billion, while Adult Nutrition sales gained 2% to USD 1.2 billion. Excluding currency effects, worldwide Nutrition sales grew 4.9% in the quarter, compared with a 2.1% decline for the first nine months.
What the separation changes
The planned company will include brands such as Ensure, PediaSure, Pedialyte, Glucerna and Similac. Abbott said the independent structure should allow the Nutrition business to direct resources more effectively toward innovation, commercial activity and other priorities.
Chief Executive Robert Ford said consumer preferences, wellness trends and retail execution increasingly shape the Nutrition market. Management also expects the standalone company to invest more in sales and marketing and potentially pursue smaller acquisitions.
Daniel Salvadori, currently Abbott's executive vice president and group president for Established Pharmaceuticals and Nutritional Products, is slated to lead the new company. It is expected to have approximately USD 8.5 billion in annual sales, about 16,000 employees and 14 manufacturing sites.
Abbott expects its remaining medical devices, diagnostics and established pharmaceuticals businesses to generate approximately USD 42 billion in annual sales after the separation. The company has said the transaction will not affect its 2026 guidance or the 2027 guidance it plans to provide in January, although one-time separation charges are expected and have not yet been quantified.
