- The next-generation test uses whole-genome sequencing and MAESTRO technology to identify molecular residual disease.
- Abbott is evaluating the test across more than 20 ongoing studies and plans to broaden payer coverage and international access.
Abbott announced the commercial availability of its next-generation Oncodetect molecular residual disease test in the United States on Monday, October 26. The company said the personalized, tumor-informed assay is designed to detect traces of cancer during and after treatment. The details were published in an Abbott press release.
Broader signals in tumor monitoring
The test analyzes a patient's tumor to identify unique DNA markers and then searches for those signals in blood samples. Abbott combines whole-genome sequencing with MAESTRO technology, which enriches tumor DNA before sequencing and is intended to improve detection when circulating tumor DNA levels are very low.
Oncodetect can track up to 5,000 patient-specific variants, compared with up to 200 for the first-generation test. Abbott says the new approach has a detection limit below one part per million under high-end inputs and more than 99 percent analytical specificity.
Access remains a commercial milestone
Abbott said the test is available for patients with solid tumors through healthcare providers. The company is continuing more than 20 studies across tumor types while working on payer coverage and international expansion. The test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, a factor that remains relevant to adoption and access.
