- Mehr als 20 laufende Studien sollen die Anwendung bei verschiedenen Tumorarten weiter untersuchen.
Abbott Laboratories announced the commercial availability of its next-generation Oncodetect molecular residual disease test on October 26, expanding its cancer diagnostics portfolio with a personalized assay for patients with solid tumors. The company said the test is designed to detect traces of circulating tumor DNA during and after cancer treatment. The announcement was made in an Abbott press release.
New test broadens cancer monitoring
Oncodetect uses a tissue sample from a biopsy or surgery to identify genetic markers unique to a patient's tumor. Follow-up blood samples then look for those same signals, giving physicians a molecular view of residual disease and changes over time. Abbott said the test can support assessment of recurrence risk, treatment response and subsequent care decisions.
The new version combines whole-genome sequencing with MAESTRO, a technology developed at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and enhanced by Abbott. The approach tracks as many as 5,000 patient-specific variants, compared with up to 200 for the first-generation test. Abbott said MAESTRO can enrich tumor DNA from blood by up to 1,000-fold before sequencing.
According to the company, the test has a limit of detection below one part per million under high-end inputs and analytical specificity above 99 percent. Abbott described this as a 30-fold improvement in the limit of detection compared with the earlier version. The assay is available for patients with solid tumors through a healthcare provider, but it has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Clinical evidence remains central
Abbott cited several studies and presentations supporting the next-generation platform. In locally advanced esophageal cancer, longitudinal testing detected circulating tumor DNA before recurrence in all 14 patients who later experienced recurrence. In the PARTNER triple-negative breast cancer study, a single post-surgery blood draw identified 90 percent of patients who later experienced distant recurrence within five years.
New Beta-CORRECT results presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress showed a 30 percentage-point improvement in sensitivity for recurrence within two years in patients with stage II to IV colorectal cancer, compared with the first-generation test at a single post-surgical time point. Abbott is evaluating the next-generation assay in more than 20 ongoing studies across solid tumor types and is working on payer coverage and international expansion.
