Aflac Incorporated reported mixed third-quarter results on Wednesday, November 4, with portfolio repositioning losses weighing heavily on reported profit while the U.S. insurance operation delivered stronger adjusted earnings. The company said in its third-quarter results release that net earnings fell to 303 million US dollars from 1.639 billion US dollars a year earlier.
Portfolio losses mask operating resilience
Total revenue declined 31.0 percent to 3.271 billion US dollars. Net investment losses reached 1.072 billion US dollars, compared with a 275 million US dollar gain in the year-earlier quarter, primarily reflecting realized losses linked to the strategic repositioning of the portfolio.
Adjusted earnings declined 8.5 percent to 1.214 billion US dollars, and adjusted diluted earnings per share fell 2.4 percent to 2.43 US dollars. The adjusted result included 453 million US dollars of reserve remeasurement gains, making the underlying operating picture different from the reported earnings decline.
U.S. strength contrasts with Japan
Aflac U.S. net earned premiums rose 3.3 percent to 1.544 billion US dollars. Pretax adjusted earnings advanced 31.5 percent to 493 million US dollars, while the benefit ratio improved to 40.7 percent from 45.6 percent and the pretax adjusted margin widened to 27.7 percent from 21.7 percent.
Aflac Japan remained weaker. Net earned premiums fell 2.0 percent in yen terms to 240.3 billion yen, while pretax adjusted earnings declined 15.2 percent to 152.3 billion yen. The company cited lower reserve remeasurement gains, reinsurance effects and products reaching paid-up status.
Capital return stays in focus
Aflac returned 1.1 billion US dollars to shareholders during the quarter, including 804 million US dollars of repurchases and 305 million US dollars of dividends. The board declared a fourth-quarter dividend of 0.61 US dollars per share, payable on December 1 to shareholders of record on November 18. The increase marked 44 consecutive years of dividend growth.
