Cloud strength meets cash pressure

  • Alphabet's heavy AI investment pushed quarterly free cash flow into negative territory.
  • Management expects capital spending to increase significantly in 2027, keeping cash conversion central for investors.

Alphabet reported strong third-quarter operating growth on October 28, but the results also exposed the cash burden of its artificial-intelligence buildout. Reuters said revenue growth at Google Cloud outpaced expectations, while advertising revenue missed Wall Street targets.

Cloud carries the growth story

Alphabet's revenue rose 25 percent year over year to 127.577 billion US dollars for the quarter ended September 30. Google Cloud revenue climbed 103 percent to 30.709 billion US dollars, and segment operating income increased to 11.121 billion US dollars from 3.594 billion US dollars a year earlier.

Search and other revenue increased 12 percent to 63.350 billion US dollars. The combination gives Alphabet a powerful growth engine beyond advertising, but it also raises the financial stakes of expanding computing capacity, data centers and TPU systems.

Investment weighs on cash conversion

Alphabet generated 42.290 billion US dollars in operating cash flow, while capital spending reached 51.355 billion US dollars. Free cash flow therefore fell to negative 9.065 billion US dollars. Net income available to common shareholders declined to 26.170 billion US dollars, partly reflecting an 8.664 billion US dollar loss on equity securities.

Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi said Alphabet expects capital spending to increase significantly in 2027. Reuters also reported that the company expects near-term margin pressure from third-party cloud capacity as it expands infrastructure for AI demand.
