American Electric Power is linking a larger infrastructure program to rising electricity demand. In its October 28, 2026 release, the utility said third-quarter operating earnings rose to 2.23 US dollars per share from 1.80 US dollars a year earlier and raised its long-term growth outlook. The company also said it signed 15 gigawatts of new load commitments during the quarter.
American Electric Power stock traded at 111.20 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 16:42 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Compared with the 114.66-euro quote cited in the previous report at 13:01 CET the same day, the stock was down 3.02 percent. The comparison is separate from the Xetra session and reflects the move between the two Lang & Schwarz quotes.
Higher targets support investment
AEP now expects annual operating earnings-per-share growth of 9 percent to 11 percent from 2027 through 2031, up from its previous 7 percent to 9 percent range. It also expects 2026 operating earnings to reach at least the upper end of its 6.25 to 6.55 US dollar guidance range.
The company introduced operating earnings guidance of 6.75 to 7.05 US dollars per share for 2027 and 7.40 to 7.70 US dollars for 2028. The outlook is based on an expanded five-year capital plan of 100 billion US dollars through 2031. AEP expects the plan to lift its rate base from 87 billion US dollars in 2026 to 162 billion US dollars in 2031.
According to American Electric Power, the plan includes 37 billion US dollars for transmission, 36 billion US dollars for generation and 22 billion US dollars for distribution. AEP said fully executed take-or-pay agreements could provide up to 21 billion US dollars in fixed-cost offsets for residential customers over the life of the contracts.
Execution remains the key test
The enlarged plan gives AEP greater visibility on regulated asset growth, but it also raises the importance of construction timing, regulatory approvals and financing costs. The company must convert contracted demand into operating projects while maintaining the returns assumed in its guidance.
