- MMG and Anglo American have extended the long-stop date for the Brazilian nickel transaction.
- The European Commission is examining the deal in a Phase II competition review.
- Completion still depends on regulatory clearance, keeping the portfolio reshaping plan exposed to political and market risk.
MMG and Anglo American have extended the deadline for their proposed Brazilian nickel transaction, keeping the sale active while European regulators examine its competitive impact. Mining.com reported on Tuesday, November 3, that the long-stop date moved from October 31 to December 31, 2026, rather than allowing the agreement to terminate before regulatory clearance.
Anglo American stock traded at 46.01 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:07 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
EU review remains decisive
The European Commission has opened an in-depth Phase II investigation into MMG's proposed acquisition of Anglo American's Brazilian nickel operations. The regulator is expected to reach a decision by December 21, leaving the parties a short period between the regulatory timetable and the revised contractual deadline.
The transaction is valued at up to 500 million US dollars and covers two operating ferronickel businesses and two greenfield projects in Brazil. The review focuses on whether MMG could redirect Brazilian ferronickel supplies away from European stainless-steel producers. That concern is linked to wider European efforts to limit dependence on China for critical industrial inputs.
MMG said it would continue working with the European Commission and Anglo American during the review. Before the original deadline, the Chinese-backed miner also offered guarantees designed to maintain ferronickel supplies to European stainless-steel producers. The commitments are intended to address the regulator's concerns, but they have not produced a final decision.
Portfolio strategy faces a key test
For Anglo American, the sale is part of a broader effort to reshape its portfolio and exit assets that are less central to its long-term focus. Completion would provide cash proceeds and remove the Brazilian nickel operations from the group. A regulatory block would instead leave the company facing a decision over the future of the assets.
Mining.com, citing Reuters, reported that Anglo American could close the Brazilian nickel operation if the EU blocks MMG's acquisition. That possibility makes the December review more significant than a simple extension of a transaction deadline: it could determine whether the operations continue under new ownership or move toward care and maintenance.
Investors should therefore focus on the European Commission's decision before the revised December 31 deadline. The extension reduces the immediate risk of the agreement expiring, but it does not remove the regulatory condition or guarantee that the disposal will close.
