Bank of China is approaching its third-quarter reporting checkpoint with a mixed operating picture from the first half and a constructive sector view from JPMorgan. A summary published by Futu on October 27 said the investment bank expects state-owned Chinese banks to outperform joint-stock lenders in the third quarter, while earnings trends remain uneven across the sector.

Analysts expect resilient growth

The JPMorgan analysis expects revenue at state-owned banks to rise 9 percent year over year in the third quarter and profit to increase 5 percent. For joint-stock commercial banks, it projects revenue growth of 5 percent and a 2 percent decline in profit. These are analyst estimates, not reported Bank of China results.

Within the state-owned group, the analysis places Bank of China behind ICBC and China Construction Bank in its preference order. It assigns Bank of China an Overweight stance and a HKD 7.00 target for the H shares, citing valuation. The report also expects state-owned banks to retain 5 percent profit growth in the second half of 2026, although revenue growth could slow to 7 percent in 2027.

Half-year figures set the benchmark

Bank of China's interim figures provide the comparison point for the coming update. Profit for the six months ended June 30, 2026, rose 4.67 percent year over year to RMB 132.031 billion, while operating income increased 8.41 percent to RMB 357.113 billion. Net interest income grew 10.20 percent to RMB 236.733 billion.

The earnings mix also carries a risk signal. Impairment losses increased 18.39 percent to RMB 68.076 billion in the first half. Investors will therefore be watching whether loan growth and net interest income can continue to offset credit costs in the quarter ended September 30.

Investors await the next release

The Futu summary describes the JPMorgan note as a preview ahead of third-quarter disclosures by China's major banks. For Bank of China, the next release should clarify whether the first-half pattern of higher income and rising impairment charges continued into the second half of the year.

The Bank of China investor relations page lists the 2026 interim report and other current financial-report materials. The Futu summary identifies asset quality, net interest margins and profit growth as the main sector watchpoints.
