- A St. Louis jury ruled for Bayer-owned Monsanto in claims brought by three women.
- The verdict follows a June Supreme Court decision that limited warning-based Roundup claims.
- Bayer is still seeking approval for a proposed 7.25 billion US dollar settlement covering other cases.
Bayer-owned Monsanto won a Missouri trial on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in which three women claimed that Roundup caused their cancer. Reuters reported that a St. Louis jury unanimously rejected the claims in the first Roundup case to reach trial since a June US Supreme Court ruling narrowed the legal arguments available to plaintiffs.
Reuters said the verdict covered allegations of design defects, fraud and negligence. Bayer has denied that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer and continues to defend the safety of its herbicides. The company told Reuters that the result could make it harder for other plaintiffs to establish viable claims and prove the necessary evidence in court.
Reuters said the three plaintiffs had sued in 2020, alleging regular Roundup use before developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. One plaintiff died before the trial began, and the three women are not part of Bayer's proposed settlement.
Settlement remains the larger legal test
The verdict does not resolve Bayer's wider US litigation. The company is seeking to settle tens of thousands of other Roundup claims through a proposed 7.25 billion US dollar agreement that remains under review by a Missouri state court judge in St. Louis. Reuters reported that Bayer faces about 65,000 claims in US state and federal courts.
The legal backdrop changed in June, when the Supreme Court ruled that federal law requires herbicide manufacturers to use the label approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA label does not require a cancer warning. Bayer argues that the ruling also limits other legal theories, while plaintiffs' attorneys maintain that design-defect and negligence claims remain available.
The litigation has weighed on Bayer since its 2018 acquisition of Monsanto and has cost the company billions of dollars, according to Reuters. For investors, the latest verdict is relevant because additional trial outcomes could influence the pace and cost of resolving the remaining claims, but the pending settlement review remains the more significant balance-sheet and cash-flow issue.
