BHP Group's first-quarter production update and annual general meeting shaped the week's investor focus. The mining group reported lower copper output for the quarter ended September 30, while keeping its full-year production guidance unchanged.
Copper output falls, guidance holds
According to Morningstar, BHP produced 400,700 tonnes of copper in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, down 19 percent from the same period a year earlier. Iron ore production rose 3.7 percent to 66.5 million tonnes, while energy coal output increased 26 percent.
BHP attributed the copper decline to lower planned grades, scheduled maintenance, severe weather in Chile, safety-related stoppages and the conveyor failure at Carrapateena. The company retained its FY2027 copper production guidance of 1.65 million to 1.8 million tonnes. That leaves execution and the recovery of affected operations as key monitoring points for investors.
AGM puts returns beside growth
At the October 22 annual meeting, BHP presented a total FY2026 dividend equivalent to AUD 2.40 per share, representing USD 8.7 billion returned to shareholders and the highest dividend in four years. The Financial Times reproduced the company's AGM addresses, which also set out management's growth priorities.
Chief Executive Brandon Craig said Jansen potash remains on track for first production in mid-2027. BHP also highlighted copper expansion options at Escondida, Copper South Australia and Vicuña. Management said its current plans are expected to support compound annual production growth of approximately 3 to 4 percent through 2035, including around 5 percent annual copper growth.
