- BMW is targeting an automotive operating margin of 3% to 5% by 2028 and 8% to 10% in the early 2030s.
- The plan combines cost reductions with Neue Klasse vehicles, local production and a broader premium offering.
- Third-quarter results are listed for November 3, keeping China demand and profitability in focus.
BMW is pursuing a long-term recovery in automotive profitability after weak demand in China and repeated profit warnings put pressure on its earnings profile. In a Reuters report published on September 30, the company outlined a strategy built around leaner structures, more local production and new premium models.
Bernstein analysts said BMW is targeting an automotive operating margin of 3% to 5% by 2028. The longer-term goal is 8% to 10% in the early 2030s, compared with a most recent margin of 2.3% cited in the Reuters report. The targets imply a material improvement, but they also leave execution and demand risks central to the investment case.
Costs and products drive recovery
BMW plans to reduce its German workforce by about 8,000 positions through a redundancy program. The company also plans to simplify its model range and increase the use of artificial intelligence in crash simulations and driver assistance, according to Reuters.
Management's approach is not limited to cost control. Bernstein analyst Stephen Reitman said the Neue Klasse range, led by the electric iX3 SUV, is intended to provide a growth component. BMW is also expected to expand its premium portfolio with a luxury SUV positioned above the X7 and broader M and Alpina ranges from 2027.
BMW separately plans to invest 2 billion euros in German production of the next-generation 3 Series. Bernstein identified China as the main area requiring production adjustment and capacity flexibility, while European and US plants were described as fully utilised.
China remains the key test
The strategy follows a sharp deterioration in BMW's operating environment. Reuters said the company issued its third profit warning in just over three years in June, with weakness in China among the main pressures. That makes regional demand, pricing and production flexibility important indicators for the next earnings update.
Reuters reported that BMW shares were 1.4% higher at 07:44 GMT on September 30 as the strategy was being discussed. On Friday, October 30, BMW stock traded at 57.94 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:30 CET, 0.45 percent above the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29.
