Boeing stock faces a mixed recovery picture after third-quarter revenue rose while commercial margins stayed negative. Management stressed safety and execution.

Boeing's recovery remains uneven

  • Third-quarter revenue increased as defense and services growth offset weaker commercial-airplane revenue.
  • Commercial Airplanes remained loss-making despite 161 deliveries and 300 net orders.
  • Management is targeting disciplined execution as the 737 program moves toward stabilized production.

Boeing reported a narrower third-quarter loss on October 27, but the recovery remained uneven. The aerospace group posted revenue of USD 24.188 billion for the three months ended September 30, up 4 percent from a year earlier, while net loss fell to USD 116 million from USD 5.339 billion. Boeing's third-quarter release also showed a GAAP loss of USD 0.26 per diluted share and a non-GAAP core loss of USD 0.34.

Backlog expands as execution matters

Total backlog reached a record USD 745.431 billion at September 30, including more than 6,300 commercial airplanes. Commercial Airplanes accounted for USD 611.833 billion, Defense, Space & Security for USD 100.505 billion and Global Services for USD 32.725 billion. The backlog gives Boeing substantial future demand visibility, but conversion into profitable deliveries remains central to the investment case.

Commercial Airplanes generated USD 10.720 billion in quarterly revenue, down 3 percent year over year, and reported an operating loss of USD 697 million. Boeing attributed the negative 6.5 percent operating margin to a less favorable delivery mix, higher projected costs linked to future production-rate adjustments and higher estimated supply-chain costs. The unit delivered 161 airplanes, compared with 160 a year earlier, and booked 300 net orders.

Defense and services offset pressure

Defense, Space & Security provided the strongest counterweight, with revenue rising 15 percent to USD 7.935 billion and operating earnings reaching USD 492 million. The result included a USD 252 million gain from the sale of HRL Laboratories. Boeing also said the segment's backlog reached a record USD 101 billion, with 23 percent tied to customers outside the United States.

Global Services revenue increased 4 percent to USD 5.574 billion, while operating earnings rose 9 percent to USD 1.019 billion. Its 18.3 percent operating margin underlines the division's role as a steadier earnings contributor while commercial production remains under pressure.

Production milestones remain ahead

Boeing said the 737 program is progressing toward a stabilized production rate of 47 aircraft per month. The 737-7 received amended type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration during the quarter, and the 737-10 received certification in October. The 777X remains on track for first delivery in 2027.

Operating cash flow was USD 1.496 billion, while free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure, was USD 464 million. Boeing said operating cash flow reflected working-capital timing and approximately USD 0.7 billion in Department of Justice settlement payments. Cash and marketable securities stood at USD 20.7 billion at quarter-end, against consolidated debt of USD 45.9 billion.

CEO Kelly Ortberg said Boeing was not finished with its recovery and would maintain its focus on safety, quality, lean operations and disciplined execution. For investors, the record backlog supports long-term demand, while the commercial segment's losses and production costs keep execution risk in focus.

Boeing stock traded at EUR 153.37 on Lang & Schwarz at 10:37 CEST on Friday, October 30, 1.50 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29, at EUR 155.70. The real-time quote of Boeing stock reflects the latest trading indication.

U.S. equities remain influenced by the broader S&P 500 market environment, while Boeing's next investment focus remains the pace and profitability of production recovery.
