- Management plans to prioritize excess cash flow for remaining Deepwater Horizon liabilities.
BP published its third-quarter results on Friday, October 30, reporting stronger earnings, higher operating cash flow and a sharp reduction in net debt. The company's official results release attributed the improvement mainly to higher realized refining margins and stronger gas and marketing trading.
Underlying replacement cost profit reached 8.458 billion US dollars, compared with 5.732 billion US dollars in the second quarter. BP also reported 14.829 billion US dollars in operating cash flow. The underlying figure is an adjusted measure: reported profit was 4.696 billion US dollars and included a 4.0 billion US dollar net impairment charge among the adjusting items.
Balance sheet takes priority
Net debt stood at 13.870 billion US dollars at the end of September, down from 22.251 billion US dollars three months earlier. BP said the cash generation allowed it to reduce leverage and that its remaining Deepwater Horizon liabilities would be addressed through excess cash flow. The company also maintained its quarterly dividend at 8.660 US cents per ordinary share.
