  • The first phase targets up to 100MW and could begin operations in the first quarter of 2028, subject to approvals and a suitable tenant.

Brookfield is joining Drax, Radiant and Qai on a planned artificial intelligence data center project at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire. Drax announced the partnership on Tuesday, November 3, saying the full development could attract more than GBP 20 billion in investment.

The proposal adds a new operating project to Brookfield's AI infrastructure strategy. The Brookfield-Qai joint venture would provide investment capital and operating capabilities, while Radiant would lead the data center development and Drax would contribute land, power integration and planning expertise, according to the Drax announcement.

Three phases planned at Drax

The first phase targets up to 100MW of capacity, with operations targeted from the first quarter of 2028. A second phase could add up to 500MW between 2028 and 2031, while further capacity is under consideration after 2031.

The plans remain conditional. Drax said the first phase requires planning, regulatory and network approvals, a suitable tenant, commercial agreements and final investment decisions. A community consultation is expected before the formal planning process.

AI infrastructure remains execution-dependent

Drax said the site has 4GW of grid access, 2.6GW of active dispatchable generation and 1,000 acres of estate. The proposed development would initially use grid power, with later phases potentially using generation from the power station under a behind-the-meter arrangement.
