European lawmakers have asked the European Commission to assess whether BYD vehicles pose a security threat, adding a regulatory issue to the Chinese carmaker's expansion across the region. The request was made on Wednesday, November 4, and reported by Reuters on Thursday, November 5.
Fourteen members of the European Parliament asked the EU executive to have the bloc's cybersecurity agency assess the level of risk and consider whether BYD should be placed on a list of high-risk suppliers. The lawmakers also raised the possibility of excluding BYD vehicles from public procurement and restricting access to strategic dual-use infrastructure.
BYD rejects remote-access concerns
BYD said data processed or stored in vehicles and the cloud cannot be remotely accessed from China. The company added that BYD Europe does not make such data available to BYD entities or third parties in China, while customers remain in control of their data.
The debate follows a decision by the US military last month to ban BYD vehicles from Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, citing what it called an unacceptable and unmitigable risk. The Reuters report also said that French lawmaker Francois Kalfon urged the French government to take measures against the perceived risk from connected Chinese vehicles.
The European Commission typically has six weeks to respond to questions from lawmakers. The outcome could affect BYD's access to public-sector demand and add scrutiny to its European expansion, although the company has a production facility in Hungary and plans additional plants on the continent.
