Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce announced on Friday, October 30, 2026, that Bill Morneau will become chair of its board on January 1, 2027. The appointment gives investors a clear succession plan at the Canadian lender as current chair Katharine B. Stevenson prepares to leave the board.
The announcement was carried by Yahoo Finance from a CNW release. Stevenson will retire from the board on December 31, 2026, after six years as chair and ten years as an independent director.
Morneau brings public and private-sector experience
Morneau has been an independent CIBC director since 2022. He currently chairs the board's Corporate Governance Committee and previously chaired its Technology Committee. He also serves as a director on CIBC's U.S. Board.
His background includes service as Canada's finance minister and a member of Parliament from 2015 to 2020. He also served as governor of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank during that period. Before entering politics, Morneau led Morneau Shepell from 1990 to 2015.
