Canadian Natural Resources reported a strong third quarter on November 5, but the main investor focus shifted beyond earnings to capital returns. The company reached its CAD 13 billion net debt target earlier than anticipated and said it now intends to allocate 100% of free cash flow to share repurchases, subject to market conditions. The BOE Report carried the company release from Newsfile.

Canadian Natural generated net earnings of CAD 3.0 billion in the quarter ended September 30, compared with CAD 600 million a year earlier. Adjusted net earnings from operations reached CAD 3.4 billion, or CAD 1.65 per diluted share, versus CAD 1.8 billion and CAD 0.86 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted funds flow rose to CAD 5.5 billion, or CAD 2.67 per diluted share, from CAD 3.9 billion a year earlier.

Production holds up through maintenance

Total production averaged 1.652 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, up 2% from the comparable quarter. Liquids production increased 4% to 1.217 million barrels per day, while thermal in situ output reached a record 299,632 barrels per day, 9% above the prior-year period.

The figures included a planned turnaround at the Horizon oil sands operation, which reduced quarterly production by roughly 75,000 barrels per day. Canadian Natural said the work was completed on October 6 in 28 days, seven days ahead of budget. The company expects the early completion to add about 23,000 barrels per day of high-margin synthetic crude production in the fourth quarter.

North American conventional liquids production excluding thermal in situ operations reached a record 358,484 barrels per day, an increase of 16% from a year earlier. Management attributed the advance to acquisitions and strong well performance. Horizon production is currently averaging approximately 640,000 barrels per day, and the company is targeting a three-year turnaround interval that would lift average capacity by about 5,000 barrels per day.

Buybacks become the central catalyst

Net debt stood at CAD 12.1 billion at September 30, below the company target. Canadian Natural said it will target CAD 800 million of share purchases in both November and December. In the first nine months of 2026, total shareholder returns reached approximately CAD 10.6 billion, including dividends, share repurchases and debt reduction.

The board also approved a quarterly cash dividend of CAD 0.625 per common share on November 4. The payment is scheduled for January 5, 2027, to shareholders of record on December 15, 2026. The annualized dividend is CAD 2.50 per share.

Canadian Natural Resources stock traded at 43.76 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 13:09 CET on Friday, November 6, 2026. Investors can follow the real-time quote of Canadian Natural Resources stock.

The Q3 figures support the company’s argument that its long-life oil sands and conventional assets can sustain production and cash generation through scheduled maintenance. For the stock, the new repurchase pace provides a direct return mechanism, while its continuation depends on commodity prices, operating performance and market conditions.

Canadian Natural Resources operates in a market shaped by global crude prices and Canadian pipeline access. Investors can review current market developments around the broader energy and equity markets.
