- Third-quarter sales and revenues increased 17 percent year over year to 20.7 billion US dollars.
- Adjusted profit per share rose to 7.20 US dollars from 4.95 US dollars a year earlier.
- Management cited strong order rates and a record backlog while returning 1.9 billion US dollars through buybacks and dividends.
Caterpillar reported its third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, October 29, with sales and revenues reaching a record 20.7 billion US dollars. The increase of 17 percent from 17.6 billion US dollars a year earlier reflected higher sales volume and favorable price realization, according to the company's third-quarter results release.
Profitability improved sharply
Profit per share rose to 7.13 US dollars from 4.88 US dollars in the third quarter of 2025. On an adjusted basis, which excludes restructuring costs, profit per share increased to 7.20 US dollars from 4.95 US dollars.
Operating profit margin expanded to 20.4 percent from 17.3 percent. The adjusted operating profit margin reached 20.6 percent, compared with 17.5 percent in the prior-year quarter. The figures point to stronger operating leverage alongside the higher sales volume, although the company continues to operate in an environment affected by cost and supply-chain pressures.
Orders support the outlook
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Creed said the quarter showed the durability of Caterpillar's end markets, citing strong order rates and a record backlog. He also said the company was executing its strategic priorities in a dynamic environment and remained positioned for a strong year.
The backlog provides visibility for future production, but it also places execution demands on capacity, suppliers and dealers. For investors, the key question is whether Caterpillar can convert the order pipeline into revenue while preserving the margin improvement shown in the quarter. The company's exposure to construction, mining, power generation and industrial engines leaves the stock sensitive to capital spending cycles as well as to demand from data-center infrastructure.
Cash returns remain significant
Enterprise operating cash flow was 4.4 billion US dollars in the quarter, while enterprise cash stood at 7.9 billion US dollars at quarter-end. Caterpillar returned 1.9 billion US dollars to shareholders, consisting of 1.2 billion US dollars in common-stock repurchases and 0.7 billion US dollars in dividends.
Caterpillar stock traded at 570.40 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:35 CET on Friday, October 30, 2026. Investors will next weigh the durability of order rates, the pace of backlog conversion and the company's ability to sustain margins as the business moves through the final quarter of 2026.
