Quarterly gains strengthen Cemex's position

  • Cemex's third-quarter net profit rose on higher prices, cement volumes and efficiency gains.
  • Operating EBITDA advanced faster than revenue, lifting the quarterly margin year over year.
  • Mexico led regional earnings growth, while US EBITDA declined despite higher sales.
  • Asset sales and stronger cash generation support Cemex's capital allocation flexibility.

Cemex reported stronger third-quarter results on October 27, with higher prices, cement volumes and its Project Cutting Edge efficiency program supporting profitability. CemNet said net profit attributable to controlling shareholders reached USD 407 million, up from USD 264 million a year earlier.

The building-materials group increased third-quarter revenue 8 percent to USD 4.59 billion from USD 4.25 billion. Operating EBITDA rose 12 percent to USD 990 million from USD 882 million, while the margin widened to 21.6 percent from 20.8 percent. On a like-for-like basis, revenue increased 5 percent and operating EBITDA advanced 9 percent.

Mexico leads regional earnings growth

Mexico was the strongest contributor to the quarter. Operating EBITDA in the country climbed 30 percent to USD 480 million, helped by stronger cement demand and cost efficiencies. In the United States, sales increased 5 percent, but operating EBITDA fell 4 percent to USD 259 million. CemNet attributed the regional differences to operating conditions and cost developments.

Operating EBITDA in Europe, the Middle East and Africa rose 4 percent to USD 257 million. Pricing and efficiency gains more than offset higher energy costs in that region. The regional mix leaves Mexico as the clearest near-term earnings driver, while US profitability remains exposed to production and raw-material pressures.

Cash generation improves capital flexibility

Free cash flow from operations reached a third-quarter record of USD 723 million, an increase of 34 percent from the prior year. For the first nine months, the measure rose 194 percent to USD 1.4 billion. That stronger cash generation gives Cemex more room to fund strategic investments while continuing its efficiency program.

For January through September, revenue increased 10 percent to USD 13.20 billion from USD 11.95 billion. Operating EBITDA climbed 22 percent to USD 2.80 billion, and the margin expanded to 21.2 percent from 19.2 percent. Net profit attributable to controlling shareholders, however, declined 25 percent to USD 982 million from USD 1.32 billion for the same period.

Asset pruning remains part of strategy

Cemex also sold its Atlanta ready-mix and recycled-concrete assets and entered exclusive negotiations with Vicat over assets in southeastern France. Completed and announced disposals under the asset-pruning program exceed USD 200 million, with proceeds intended for strategic investments.
