Cenovus Energy reported record upstream production for the third quarter on Wednesday, November 4, while advancing its planned acquisition of Athabasca Oil. The company said in its third-quarter results release that upstream output reached 1,024 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in the three months ended September 30.
Production reaches new quarterly record
The result marked Cenovus's first quarter above one million barrels of oil equivalent per day and exceeded second-quarter production of 970.4 thousand BOE per day. Oil Sands production also reached a quarterly record of 833.0 thousand BOE per day, with Foster Creek, Christina Lake and Sunrise each setting quarterly records.
Cenovus generated 5.023 billion Canadian dollars of adjusted funds flow and 3.569 billion Canadian dollars of free funds flow in the quarter. Net earnings rose to 3.360 billion Canadian dollars from 2.870 billion Canadian dollars in the second quarter, while operating margin increased to 6.329 billion Canadian dollars.
Athabasca deal sets next milestone
The company also reiterated that its cash-and-stock arrangement to acquire Athabasca is expected to close in December, subject to shareholder, court and other customary approvals. Cenovus said the transaction would add approximately 45 thousand BOE per day of current production and 1.3 billion barrels of proved plus probable reserves.
The release said the deal has an implied enterprise value of 5.7 billion Canadian dollars and was valued at approximately 12.00 Canadian dollars per Athabasca share. For Cenovus investors, the next focus is the execution of the integration and the ability to sustain high oil sands output while the transaction moves through its approval process.
