- Chubb's nine-month core operating income rose 21.0 percent year over year, supported by underwriting, investment and life insurance results.
- Higher catastrophe losses weighed on third-quarter property and casualty underwriting, while the combined ratio widened to 84.1 percent.
- New claims leadership appointments are intended to strengthen operating consistency, technical oversight and customer service.
Chubb Limited reported a stronger nine-month operating performance on October 20, 2026, even as higher catastrophe losses pressured its third-quarter property and casualty underwriting. The insurer's October 20 earnings release shows record core operating income of 8.60 billion US dollars for the first nine months, up 21.0 percent from the prior year.
Core operating income per share reached 21.94 US dollars for the nine-month period, an increase of 24.5 percent. Third-quarter core operating income was 2.98 billion US dollars, or 7.66 US dollars per share, with the per-share figure up 0.8 percent despite total core operating income falling 2.2 percent. Net income rose 1.5 percent to 2.84 billion US dollars, or 7.30 US dollars per share.
Underwriting remains the key swing factor
Property and casualty net premiums written increased 1.9 percent to 13.18 billion US dollars. Underwriting income, however, declined 8.8 percent to 2.06 billion US dollars as pre-tax net catastrophe losses climbed to 705 million US dollars from 285 million US dollars a year earlier. The P&C combined ratio consequently widened to 84.1 percent from 81.8 percent.
The underlying picture was more resilient. Current accident-year underwriting income excluding catastrophe losses rose 3.3 percent to 2.26 billion US dollars, producing an 82.6 percent combined ratio. Chubb also reported record pre-tax net investment income of 1.79 billion US dollars, up 8.6 percent, while adjusted net investment income increased 6.3 percent to 1.89 billion US dollars.
Growth was uneven across the insurance portfolio. Overseas General net premiums written rose 6.7 percent, North America Personal increased 5.3 percent and North America Agriculture advanced 5.1 percent. North America Commercial declined 2.7 percent as Chubb reduced exposure to business with inadequate pricing or terms. Chief Executive Evan Greenberg said the company expects North America Commercial growth to improve in future quarters and reiterated a focus on underwriting discipline.
Claims structure adds execution focus
Chubb announced three Global Claims appointments on October 15. Lisa Wilson became Head of North America Claims, Jamie Trish was named Global Claims Operations Officer effective October 26, and Norm Rafsol became Global Claims Technical Director. The company's news release said the changes are designed to strengthen claims handling, operating standards, customer experience and oversight of complex exposures.
For investors, the appointments matter because claims execution can influence loss trends, customer retention and the speed at which emerging risks are recognized. The third-quarter figures show that catastrophe frequency and severity remain a material variable, while investment income and diversified life insurance operations helped support earnings.
