Comcast stock weighs strong cash flow against broadband losses

Comcast stock is being weighed against strong cash generation and persistent broadband losses. Debt and the planned media separation remain key investor tests.

Cash generation meets operating pressure

  • Comcast generated 17.1 billion US dollars in free cash flow over the twelve months through September 2026.
  • Broadband losses, weaker theme-park revenue and high debt remain key risks for shareholders.
  • The planned NBCUniversal and Sky separation is expected by mid-2027, while fourth-quarter results are due in January 2027.

Comcast is generating substantial cash, but its broadband business is losing customers and its balance sheet remains a central issue for investors. A Trefis analysis published by Yahoo Finance on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, said Comcast produced 17.1 billion US dollars in free cash flow over the twelve months through September.

Free cash flow stayed positive in each of the 13 twelve-month periods ending between September 2023 and September 2026, according to the analysis. The figure reached 18.1 billion US dollars in the twelve months through September 2025, up from 11.0 billion US dollars a year earlier, before easing in the latest period.

Broadband pressure limits the cash story

The analysis also highlighted a weakening operating trend. Comcast lost 144,000 broadband subscribers in the third quarter of 2026 as fixed wireless providers continued to take share. Revenue over the twelve months through September held broadly level at 123 billion US dollars, while operating margin fell to 14.7 percent from 18.0 percent a year earlier.

There were offsets. Wireless lines increased 18 percent year over year, and management expects the cost overhaul to generate billions of dollars over time. Theme-park revenue, however, fell 4 percent in the third quarter, with Orlando and Japan identified as weak spots.

Leverage remains important because debt holders have a prior claim on cash flow. Comcast's total debt stood at 87.4 billion US dollars at the end of September, down from 99.1 billion US dollars a year earlier. The analysis said operating income covered interest expense 4.3 times over the twelve months through September.

Separation creates a second test

Management expects fourth-quarter free cash flow to face a reversal of favorable timing effects seen in the third quarter, when the company generated 4.2 billion US dollars. Comcast also expects a charge of more than 1 billion US dollars, largely linked to its cost transformation program.

The planned separation of the NBCUniversal and Sky businesses is expected to be completed by mid-2027. Management wants both the remaining connectivity company and the separated media company to retain investment-grade credit ratings. That makes debt reduction and recurring cash generation important milestones as the transaction approaches.
