Commonwealth Bank of Australia published a fresh assessment of the US midterm result on Thursday, November 5, broadening the issues facing investors beyond domestic interest rates. Fresh macro view for investors
CBA economists said divided government could constrain the Trump administration's domestic fiscal agenda because Democrats will control the legislative agenda and congressional committees. The president retains veto powers, however, limiting the prospect of major policy reversals or new spending programs.
The analysis also points to greater potential use of presidential authority in tariffs, sanctions, export controls and foreign policy. For Australia, the direct tariff exposure may remain limited, but trade measures affecting China and other major partners could influence the wider economic outlook.
Bond markets add another signal
US government bonds rallied after the election, with Treasury yields falling by 7 to 8 basis points across the curve as investors priced in tighter constraints on fiscal policy. CBA said the initial move should not be overinterpreted, because deficits, borrowing needs and future Treasury issuance will continue to shape yields.
Australian government bonds also rallied, although CBA said domestic factors, including the Reserve Bank of Australia's latest decision, were influencing local markets. The bank's view gives investors another channel to monitor as global yields affect Australian borrowing costs and financial conditions.
