Constellation Energy said on October 27 that the U.S. Department of Energy had issued a conditional commitment of up to USD 5 billion to support nuclear uprates at eight existing facilities. The company's Constellation Energy newsroom said the potential financing could accelerate output increases without building entirely new plants or transmission corridors.

Financing supports existing reactors

The planned uprates cover Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities in Illinois, plus Calvert Cliffs in Maryland and Limerick in Pennsylvania. The projects could add nearly 1.1 gigawatts of nuclear capacity across facilities connected to the MISO and PJM grids.

The commitment remains conditional. Constellation must complete due diligence, negotiate definitive financing documents and satisfy applicable technical, legal, environmental and financial conditions. It also does not represent a final decision to proceed with every potential uprate.

Customer contracts broaden investment base

Constellation said long-term agreements with Google and Amazon have incentivized more than USD 7 billion of investment for approximately 1,080 megawatts of nuclear capacity. An agreement with Meta supports a 30-megawatt expansion at the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois.
