Contemporary Amperex Technology stock faces pressure after profit growth slowed in the third quarter. Revenue surged, but competition and policy costs weighed on margins.

Profit growth loses momentum

  • Third-quarter earnings growth slowed as competition and policy costs pressured profitability.
  • Domestic battery-market share declined while overseas demand and energy storage supported the outlook.
  • Fourth-quarter negotiations with customers will test CATL's pricing power.

Contemporary Amperex Technology reported third-quarter revenue of RMB 165.22 billion on October 20, 2026, up 58.58 percent from a year earlier. Net profit attributable to shareholders rose 14.54 percent to RMB 21.25 billion, while profit fell 5.77 percent from the second quarter. The figures showed sales advancing much faster than earnings.

Automotive World reported that the quarterly profit increase was well below the 41.2 percent rise expected by analysts. Gross margin slipped to 20.7 percent from 23.2 percent, while battery shipments exceeded 260 GWh and energy storage accounted for about a quarter of deliveries.

Domestic pressure meets overseas growth

CATL attributed the margin pressure primarily to a shift toward simpler, lower-value products and rush orders. A 2 percent consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries and a reduction in export VAT rebates from 9 percent to 6 percent added to the cost burden.

The company cannot pass the tax through to customers without renegotiating contracts, according to Automotive World. Because the tax applied for only one month in the third quarter, the fourth quarter will provide a fuller test of CATL's pricing power.

CATL's share of domestic battery installations fell to 40.9 percent in September from 49.8 percent in January, while BYD's share increased. Overseas growth and energy storage partly offset that weakness: CATL's global share of new-energy-vehicle battery usage rose to 39.4 percent in the January-to-August period from 37.7 percent.

What investors should watch

CATL expects global demand for power and storage batteries to grow 20 percent to 30 percent in 2027. The key near-term issue is whether customer negotiations can restore the company's ability to pass through tax and input costs without sacrificing volume or margin.
