Contemporary Amperex Technology retained its position as the world's largest electric-vehicle battery maker through September, according to CnEVPost, which cited figures from South Korean market researcher SNE Research published on Monday, November 2, 2026.

CATL widens its global lead

CATL recorded 389.2 gigawatt-hours of battery installations in the first nine months of 2026, up 24.9 percent from a year earlier. Its global share reached 39.1 percent, compared with 37.5 percent in the same period of 2025.

Global battery usage rose 19.7 percent to 994.5 gigawatt-hours during the period. CATL therefore expanded faster than the overall market, although its share slipped from 39.4 percent in January through August as September growth moderated.

Chinese suppliers dominate rankings

BYD ranked second with 150.9 gigawatt-hours of installations and a 15.2 percent share. CATL and BYD together accounted for 54.3 percent of global usage, while seven Chinese companies in the top ten held a combined 73.0 percent.

The market data also showed a widening difference in business exposure. SNE Research said CATL continued to expand its overseas automaker customer base, while BYD's battery supply remained largely linked to its own vehicle sales. CATL's lead is therefore supported by both scale and a broader customer mix, but monthly share movements underline the competitive pressure in China's battery market.

Investor focus shifts to execution

The figures strengthen CATL's standing in a growing global market, yet the slower September expansion and intense competition remain relevant for investors. The company's ability to convert international demand into profitable production will be important as Chinese battery makers compete for automaker contracts and energy-storage growth.

China's broader market backdrop can be followed through current reports on the Shanghai Composite.
