Optical communications leads growth
Corning reported third-quarter core sales of 5.08 billion US dollars, up 19 percent from a year earlier and above the company's guidance. Core earnings per share rose 36 percent to 0.91 US dollars. On a GAAP basis, sales reached 4.86 billion US dollars, an 18 percent year-over-year increase, while diluted earnings per share rose 56 percent to 0.78 US dollars.
The company said Optical Communications remained the main growth engine. Segment sales increased 44 percent year over year to 2.379 billion US dollars, while segment net income rose 80 percent to 532 million US dollars. Enterprise Networks sales grew 84 percent, and sales of products tied to generative artificial intelligence more than doubled from the prior year.
Corning also reported wider margins. Core gross margin expanded by 150 basis points to 40.5 percent, while core operating margin increased by 310 basis points to 22.7 percent. Adjusted free cash flow reached 661 million US dollars after the company invested more than 500 million US dollars in capacity during the quarter.
Management sees continued momentum
Chief Executive Officer Wendell Weeks said the results support the acceleration outlined in Corning's 20-30-40 Springboard plan. Chief Financial Officer Ed Schlesinger said adjusted free cash flow had reached 2.27 billion US dollars during the first nine months of 2026 as Corning continued to invest in capacity and customer programs.
For the fourth quarter, management expects core sales to grow approximately 19 percent year over year to between 5.2 billion and 5.3 billion US dollars. Core earnings per share are expected to rise approximately 36 percent to a range of 0.96 to 1.00 US dollars. The forecast keeps attention on whether demand from optical connectivity and artificial intelligence infrastructure can offset weaker areas such as Glass Innovations.
Glass Innovations sales fell 3 percent year over year to 1.506 billion US dollars, while Solar sales rose 37 percent to 436 million US dollars. Corning said it secured four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements during the quarter, including agreements with Verizon and AT&T. The company will attend the UBS Global Technology and AI Conference on December 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
