CSL Limited is preparing for a change at the top after appointing Deborah Waterhouse as chief executive officer and managing director from February 1, 2027. The decision, announced on October 21, places the former ViiV Healthcare chief at the center of the group's recovery effort after a difficult fiscal year.
Waterhouse will succeed interim CEO Gordon Naylor, who is due to become chair-elect. The broader board transition is also scheduled for 2027: Brian McNamee plans to retire as chair and director on March 31, while Carolyn Hewson is expected to support the handover as senior independent director before retiring from the board.
CSL's AGM on October 27 confirmed that management is targeting a return to profit growth. According to the Quartr AGM summary, fiscal 2027 revenue is expected to remain in line with fiscal 2026, while underlying NPAT is forecast to rise by about 5 percent at constant exchange rates.
Recovery follows a costly reset
The outlook follows a sharp statutory setback. CSL generated US$15.8 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue and underlying NPAT of US$2.8 billion, but reported a statutory net loss of US$2.6 billion. The result included US$7.1 billion in impairment and related costs and US$0.8 billion in pre-tax restructuring charges, according to the AGM review.
Underlying NPATA reached US$3.1 billion, while operating cash flow was US$3.5 billion. Net debt stood at 1.8 times EBITDA, within the group's target range, and CSL completed a US$1 billion share buyback during the year.
The operating picture was mixed across divisions. CSL Behring returned to strong growth and Seqirus gained market share, while Vifor faced generic competition and expected declines in iron-therapy revenue. That mix leaves the incoming CEO with a recovery plan that depends on execution in plasma therapies, vaccines and the renal-care portfolio.
Leadership adds an execution test
Waterhouse brings a decade of experience leading ViiV Healthcare, the HIV-focused business of GSK. Her appointment gives investors a defined leadership timetable, but it does not remove the operational task of converting cost savings and portfolio improvements into sustainable underlying earnings growth.
The CSL newsroom lists the October 21 appointment and identifies CSL Behring, CSL Plasma, CSL Seqirus and CSL Vifor as the group's principal businesses.
The real-time quote of CSL stock was 126.32 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 09:16 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
Australia's broader equity market remains the relevant regional backdrop for CSL investors; current market reports on the S&P/ASX 200 provide that context.
For investors, the next milestone is the February 1, 2027 CEO handover and the evidence that CSL can deliver its renewed profit trajectory. More news and analyses on CSL stock will track the transition and the group's progress against guidance.
