DBS Group is weighing a prime-brokerage business after weaker markets trading income pulled third-quarter profit below expectations. The Singapore bank also set out a mid-single-digit total-income growth target for 2027, giving investors a new strategic issue to assess alongside near-term earnings pressure.
The Business Times reported on Thursday, November 5, that DBS is considering combining its existing custody, market-access and trading capabilities into a broader prime-brokerage offering. Chief Executive Tan Su Shan said the bank is focused on the financialisation of Asian markets and is seeing stronger activity in institutional equities.
For the three months ended September 30, net profit fell 5 percent year on year to S$2.81 billion from S$2.95 billion. The result missed a S$2.95 billion consensus forecast cited by Bloomberg. Markets trading income dropped 65 percent to S$152 million, which DBS attributed to unfavourable market conditions, softer Asian asset markets and higher interest rates late in the quarter.
The earnings mix offered some support. Net interest income rose 4 percent to S$3.71 billion, while net fee and commission income increased 6 percent to S$1.43 billion. The bank declared a third-quarter dividend of S$0.81 per share, up from S$0.75 in the year-ago period.
2027 growth target meets higher uncertainty
DBS expects total income to grow in the mid-single-digit range in 2027, supported by loan and deposit growth, wealth management and non-interest income. Management expects the net interest margin to continue improving after an exit margin of 1.9 percent at the end of the third quarter.
The outlook is not without risks. DBS cited elevated energy prices, tighter financial conditions and geopolitical risks, while its net interest margin for the quarter declined nine basis points to 1.87 percent. The combination leaves fee growth, trading conditions and credit quality central to the investment case.
