- Delta lowered its adjusted 2026 earnings-per-share outlook to USD 5.10-5.60 from USD 6.50-7.50.
- Third-quarter fuel expense rose 62 percent year over year, while adjusted operating margin narrowed to 9.4 percent.
- Management still expects fourth-quarter revenue to grow approximately 20 percent and plans to reduce debt by more than USD 2 billion.
Delta Air Lines cut its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook on October 9, 2026, as a sharp rise in jet-fuel costs put pressure on profitability. A Ground News roundup said the carrier reduced its adjusted earnings-per-share forecast to USD 5.10-5.60 from a July range of USD 6.50-7.50.
The downgrade highlights the tension in Delta's operating model. Higher fares and resilient travel demand are supporting revenue, but the cost shock is moving faster than those offsets. Chief Financial Officer Erik Snell said fuel prices were driving the change and that Delta expected to absorb an additional USD 6 billion in fuel expense during the year.
Fuel Pressure Hits Margins
Third-quarter adjusted earnings per share came in at USD 1.72, below the USD 1.75 Wall Street expectation cited in the Ground News summary. Fuel expense climbed 62 percent from a year earlier to USD 4.1 billion, while adjusted operating margin declined to 9.4 percent from 11.1 percent.
The figures leave investors weighing two competing signals. Premium-cabin demand, loyalty revenue and higher ticket prices continue to support the top line, but the earnings conversion is weakening as fuel absorbs more of each revenue dollar. Chief Executive Ed Bastian said customer demand remained strong, while Delta's refinery in Trainer, Pennsylvania, provided only a partial offset to the increase.
Demand Supports Near-Term Plan
Delta expects fourth-quarter revenue to rise approximately 20 percent from the prior year, with the carrier also planning to pay down more than USD 2 billion of debt. That combination gives management room to defend the balance sheet, but it does not remove the sensitivity of airline earnings to energy prices.
