- DSM-Firmenich launched a Sustell capability that incorporates customer-specific crop production data into animal protein footprint calculations.
- The tool supports environmental reporting across crops, feed, farms and processing, including FLAG-aligned assessments.
- The Animal Nutrition & Health business generated 3.3 billion euros in 2024 sales and employed more than 7,800 people.
DSM-Firmenich launched a new capability within its Sustell platform on October 6, allowing users to calculate animal protein footprints with their own farm-level crop production data. The company said the update is intended to make environmental assessments more representative across the food and agriculture value chain.
According to dsm-firmenich, Sustell users can integrate primary crop data directly into feed formulations and animal farm footprint calculations. The company said this can improve visibility into environmental hotspots and support sustainability reporting, regulatory compliance and supply-chain decisions.
From averages to customer inputs
The update addresses a limitation in many environmental assessments: reliance on generic crop datasets and industry averages. By using production data from individual farms, the platform is designed to reflect conditions in specific supply chains more closely. DSM-Firmenich also linked the capability to Forests, Land and Agriculture reporting and Science Based Targets initiative requirements.
Dr David Nickell, Global Head of Sustainability at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said the feature could turn environmental measurement from an estimation exercise into a more accurate representation of real-world performance. That positioning gives Sustell a role beyond measurement alone, connecting footprint calculations with reporting and operational decisions.
Strategic context for the nutrition business
The release places the product update within DSM-Firmenich's Animal Nutrition & Health business, which the company said generated 3.3 billion euros in sales in 2024 and had more than 7,800 employees. The business includes animal nutrition and health, vitamins, carotenoids and aroma ingredients.
