General Dynamics is entering a leadership transition after reporting strong third-quarter results on Friday, October 30. The company said Amy Johnson will become president of General Dynamics Information Technology, or GDIT, on Tuesday, November 3. Johnson is a 27-year General Dynamics veteran with experience in cybersecurity, defense electronics, space and intelligence systems, according to the company announcement.
The company’s third-quarter revenue rose 12.9 percent from the year-earlier period to 14.6 billion US dollars, while diluted earnings per share increased 15.7 percent to 4.49 US dollars. Operating earnings climbed 14.7 percent, and the operating margin expanded by 20 basis points to 10.5 percent. General Dynamics said growth reached all four business groups.
Orders strengthen future visibility
Orders were the main strength in the quarter. Defense businesses received 93.8 billion US dollars of orders, driven by large Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarine awards. Aerospace added 5 billion US dollars, taking total company orders to 98.8 billion US dollars. The companywide book-to-bill ratio was 6.8 to 1.
Backlog stood at 220.3 billion US dollars at the end of the quarter. General Dynamics also cited 50.4 billion US dollars of estimated potential contract value from unfunded indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contracts and unexercised options. Including that potential value, total estimated contract value reached 270.7 billion US dollars.
Chief Executive Officer Phebe Novakovic described the quarter as exceptional, highlighting revenue growth across every segment, strong bookings and operational performance. The order profile gives the company a substantial workload for future periods, but delivery depends on production capacity, labor availability and supply-chain execution, particularly in shipbuilding.
Cash supports investment and returns
General Dynamics generated 1.7 billion US dollars of operating cash flow in the quarter, equal to 139 percent of net earnings. It paid 429 million US dollars in dividends, invested 481 million US dollars in capital expenditure and reduced total debt by 500 million US dollars. At quarter-end, debt stood at 7 billion US dollars and cash and equivalents at 4.4 billion US dollars.
The leadership change adds an operational milestone to the earnings story. Johnson will take over GDIT after building her career inside the group, while Novakovic remains chief executive and chairman in the company’s third-quarter announcement. GDIT serves federal government, defense and intelligence customers through digital modernization, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and software development.
