- Heidelberg Materials is reworking the GeZero carbon-capture project after citing weak economic and infrastructure conditions.
- The Geseke cement plant continues operating, while the group prioritizes CCUS projects with stronger business cases.
- The company says government-backed risk sharing and onshore storage could improve project economics.
Heidelberg Materials stock traded at 149.85 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 16:33 CET on Friday, October 30, 1.06 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29, at 151.20 euros. Compared with the 151.45-euro quote at 10:45 CET cited in the latest relevant report, the share price was down 1.06 percent by the afternoon.
The move comes as investors continue to assess the company's October 22 decision to pause the GeZero carbon-capture project at its Geseke site in its current form. In its press release, Heidelberg Materials said the project setup would be further optimized because current framework conditions do not support a robust business case.
GeZero pause narrows near-term options
The company said carbon dioxide transport and storage value chains were not mature enough to provide infrastructure on time and at an acceptable level of economic risk. The decision concerns the CCS project only and has no direct impact on ongoing operations at the Geseke cement plant.
For shareholders, the pause limits the near-term scope of the group's German decarbonization plans but does not end its wider CCUS strategy. Heidelberg Materials said its industrial-scale CCS facility in Brevik, Norway, has operated since June 2025, while construction of the Padeswood project in the United Kingdom began in December 2025.
