Hewlett Packard Enterprise is preparing a lunar test of edge computing, with Spaceborne Computer-4 scheduled to fly on Astrolab's FLIP rover during a mission expected to launch in 2026. Payload Space reported the project on October 21, citing HPE and comments from Mark Fernandez, the company's chief scientist for space technologies and solutions.
The module will test large language models, visual and LiDAR data processing, and autonomous monitoring on the lunar surface. NASA plans to run a neural-network model trained on Earth, Moon, and International Space Station data, while Deloitte intends to deploy its Silent Shield system for cyber-intrusion detection and near-real-time analytics.
AI processing moves closer to the edge
HPE will also support Astrolab's mission control with software designed to manage automated workloads and deliver insights from the rover. The operating model is intended to reduce the need to send all collected data back to Earth before analysis, according to Fernandez's comments to Payload Space.
Spaceborne Computer-4 would be HPE's first space computer to operate in the vacuum of space. Earlier versions flew to the International Space Station in 2017, 2021, and 2024, progressively testing commercial computing hardware, higher compute power, storage, and onboard AI.
The lunar system uses a low-power CPU and GPU with flash storage in solid-state drives from KIOXIA. Its design avoids fans and uses a radiator for thermal management; it can also reduce computing power when radiation threatens the hardware. Those features make the project a technology demonstration rather than a near-term revenue driver, but they extend HPE's AI infrastructure narrative beyond data centers and enterprise networks.
The real-time quote of Hewlett Packard Enterprise stock stood at 50.02 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:30 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026, 2.04 percent above the Xetra close of Friday, October 30.
