Listings strengthen the growth story
The listing count gives HKEX a concrete operating indicator beyond daily trading activity. The first nine months produced 118 new listings, compared with 69 in the same period of 2025, according to Futubull.
The operating backdrop was already strong in the first half. Yahoo Finance reported that revenue and other income reached HKD 16.70 billion in first half 2026, up 19.00 percent from first half 2025, while profit after tax rose 24.00 percent to HKD 10.60 billion. Basic earnings per share reached HKD 8.36, also up 24.00 percent year on year.
Trading volumes remain the key test
For investors, the quality of listing growth still depends on the secondary market that generates trading and clearing fees. HKEX management said first-half headline average daily turnover reached HKD 283.00 billion, 18.00 percent above the prior-year period, while second-quarter headline equity trading turnover reached a quarterly record of HKD 289.00 billion, according to Yahoo Finance.
The earnings mix also carries a counter-factor. Net investment income fell 11.00 percent year on year to HKD 2.56 billion in first half 2026, including a non-recurring valuation gain of HKD 298.00 million, while higher rebates to market participants weighed on margin-fund income, the same transcript said.
Rule changes add a longer-term lever
HKEX is also seeking to make the market more attractive to issuers. In its September 21, 2026 consultation, the exchange proposed raising the threshold for most major transactions from 25.00 percent to 50.00 percent and shortening the proposed spin-off waiting period from three years to one year, according to HKEX. The consultation closes on November 30, 2026, and the proposals are not final.
