- IBM researchers linked two 120-qubit processors through superconducting cables, while measured results still leave scaling and error-correction work ahead.
- The USTA partnership renewal keeps IBM as the US Open's official AI and cloud partner through 2031.
- Investors will focus on whether IBM converts software growth and quantum development into recurring commercial demand.
IBM added two new signals to its artificial-intelligence and quantum-computing strategy this week. Researchers linked two 120-qubit processors, while IBM and the USTA extended their US Open partnership through 2031.
Quantum link advances modular computing
According to The Quantum Insider, IBM researchers connected two Nighthawk R1 processors, each containing 120 qubits, with four superconducting cables. The links achieved average quantum state-transfer fidelity of 99 percent and supported entanglement between qubits on separate processors.
The result is a technical step toward modular quantum systems, but it is not yet a commercial quantum computer. Complete operations between the processors averaged 94.75 percent fidelity, and the experiment wired only selected qubits. The study was published as a preprint, so peer review remains outstanding.
USTA deal extends AI visibility
IBM and the USTA announced on October 28 a five-year partnership renewal. The IBM Newsroom said IBM will remain the US Open's Official AI and Cloud Partner through 2031. The 2026 tournament generated more than 270 million engagements across USOpen.org and the US Open app, according to the release.
The renewal supports IBM's positioning in hybrid cloud, AI and digital fan experiences. For investors, the commercial question is whether such deployments expand recurring software demand rather than remain showcase projects.
