Illinois Tool Works reported stronger third-quarter results on October 27, 2026, and raised its full-year earnings outlook. The company said revenue increased 4.4 percent year over year to USD 4.24 billion, while organic revenue growth reached 3.8 percent. Its earnings release was issued before the market opened in the United States.

Margins and demand improve

Operating income rose 5.9 percent to USD 1.18 billion, a quarterly record, while the operating margin widened by 40 basis points to 27.8 percent. Illinois Tool Works attributed the improvement in part to enterprise initiatives, which contributed 130 basis points, while price increases and other actions more than offset higher raw-material costs.

GAAP diluted earnings per share increased 6.8 percent to USD 3.00 from USD 2.81 a year earlier. The effective tax rate was 24.4 percent, compared with 21.8 percent in the prior-year quarter, creating a reported headwind even as profitability improved.

Demand was strongest in several capital-expenditure-related businesses. Test and Measurement and Electronics revenue increased 17.3 percent, including 8.2 percent organic growth, while Welding revenue rose 7.3 percent. Polymers and Fluids revenue increased 8.1 percent.

Guidance moves higher

Illinois Tool Works raised its full-year 2026 GAAP EPS guidance by USD 0.05 at the midpoint to a range of USD 11.45 to USD 11.55. The midpoint implies 10 percent year-over-year growth. Revenue-growth guidance also increased to 4.5 percent to 5.5 percent, while the company reaffirmed its organic-growth forecast of 3 percent to 4 percent.

The outlook includes an operating-margin range of 26.5 percent to 27.5 percent and free-cash-flow conversion of approximately 100 percent of net income. Management expects to repurchase approximately USD 1.5 billion of shares during 2026. The company said organic growth in the fourth quarter would need to exceed 5 percent to achieve its full-year target.

A tornado damaged two Welding facilities in late July and reduced third-quarter revenue by an estimated USD 40 million. Illinois Tool Works said the disruption reduced the Welding organic-growth rate, while business-interruption insurance largely offset the associated operating-income loss. The company expects the impact going forward to be immaterial.

Cash returns remain a support

Illinois Tool Works repurchased USD 187 million of its shares during the quarter and raised its dividend by 7 percent to an annualized USD 6.88 per share. The increase marked the 63rd consecutive year of dividend growth. Operating cash flow reached USD 953 million and free cash flow was USD 851 million.

Illinois Tool Works stock traded at EUR 250.75 on Lang & Schwarz at 12:15 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026.
