Illinois Tool Works reported stronger third-quarter profitability on October 27, 2026, and raised its full-year earnings outlook. In its third-quarter results release, the industrial manufacturer said revenue rose 4.4 percent year over year to USD 4.24 billion.

Organic revenue growth reached 3.8 percent, led by 6.0 percent growth in North America. Foreign-currency translation contributed 0.3 percentage points and an acquisition added another 0.3 percentage points. Chief Executive Officer Christopher A. O'Herlihy said demand accelerated in capital-expenditure-related businesses, including Welding and Test & Measurement and Electronics, while Polymers & Fluids remained strong.

Margins and cash flow improve

Operating income increased 5.9 percent to a quarterly record of USD 1.18 billion. The operating margin expanded by 40 basis points to 27.8 percent, with enterprise initiatives contributing 130 basis points. Price increases and other actions more than offset higher raw-material costs, according to the company.

GAAP diluted earnings per share rose 6.8 percent to USD 3.00. Operating cash flow reached USD 953 million and free cash flow was USD 851 million, equivalent to 100 percent conversion of net income. Illinois Tool Works repurchased USD 187 million of its own shares during the quarter and raised its dividend by 7 percent, extending its record of annual increases to 63 years.

A tornado that damaged two Welding facilities in late July reduced quarterly revenue by an estimated USD 40 million. Illinois Tool Works said the associated operating-income loss was largely offset by business-interruption insurance and that the forward impact should be immaterial. Excluding the disruption, the company estimated total organic growth at about 5 percent.

Full-year targets move higher

Management raised full-year 2026 GAAP EPS guidance by USD 0.05 at the midpoint to a narrowed range of USD 11.45 to USD 11.55. The midpoint represents 10 percent growth year over year. Total revenue growth guidance was increased to 4.5 to 5.5 percent, while the organic growth forecast remained at 3 to 4 percent.

Illinois Tool Works kept its full-year operating-margin target at 26.5 to 27.5 percent and expects free cash flow to equal approximately 100 percent of net income. The company also expects to repurchase approximately USD 1.5 billion of stock during 2026. The outlook is based on current demand levels and prevailing foreign-exchange rates.
