- Analysts expect sequential improvement in Imperial Oil's third-quarter performance.
- Refining margins and production volumes are central to the earnings assessment.
- Management is scheduled to discuss the results with analysts on Friday.
Imperial Oil is due to release its third-quarter results on Friday, October 30, followed by a management call. The company announced the schedule on October 20, with Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer John Whelan and Vice President of Investor Relations Peter Shaw set to host the webcast. Imperial Oil's announcement says the call will begin at 9 a.m. Mountain Time after the earnings release.
Investing.com reported on October 29 that analysts expected earnings per share of 4.74 Canadian dollars and revenue of 17.05 billion Canadian dollars. The preview described both figures as sequential improvements from the previous quarter, while noting that revenue expectations had fallen sharply over the preceding two months.
Refining remains the key swing factor
The downstream business, which includes refining and marketing, is expected to remain central to the report. Refining margins depend on the spread between crude costs and refined-product prices, making operating execution an important counterweight to volatility in upstream production.
Investors are also watching production volumes, operating efficiency and capital allocation. In the previous quarter, Imperial Oil exceeded the earnings consensus but fell short of the revenue forecast, according to the Investing.com preview. The new release will therefore show whether stronger profitability can be sustained without a comparable improvement in sales.
