- Imperial Oil posted record third-quarter earnings as stronger refining margins and higher commodity prices outweighed lower upstream production.
- Refinery utilization fell year over year, while management is targeting higher Strathcona throughput and plans to complete accelerated share repurchases before year-end.
- The Kearl production target was reduced after a third-party pipeline outage disrupted operations during the quarter.
Imperial Oil reported record third-quarter net income on October 30, 2026, as stronger commodity prices and downstream performance offset lower production and refinery throughput. The company said net income reached 2.454 billion Canadian dollars for the quarter, compared with 539 million Canadian dollars a year earlier, according to its October 30 earnings release.

Refining led the earnings rebound
Downstream net income rose to 1.555 billion Canadian dollars from 444 million Canadian dollars in the third quarter of 2025. Imperial attributed the increase primarily to improved industry refining margins and favorable product mix effects, including a 170 million Canadian dollar contribution linked mainly to renewable diesel.
The Strathcona renewable diesel facility reached its highest canola throughput during the quarter. Imperial said rail-logistics debottlenecking at Strathcona is progressing and is expected to improve refinery capacity utilization by year-end. Petroleum product sales increased to 474,000 barrels per day from 464,000 barrels per day, helped by higher export sales.
Upstream volumes remained under pressure
Upstream production averaged 418,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day, down from 462,000 barrels per day a year earlier. Kearl production averaged 282,000 gross barrels per day, compared with 316,000 barrels per day in the prior-year quarter. Imperial cited lower production conditions at Kearl, planned turnaround work and a third-party pipeline outage that caused a full production shutdown for multiple days.
The company now targets total gross Kearl production of 280,000 barrels per day in 2026, equivalent to 199,000 barrels per day on Imperial's share. That target reduction keeps operational reliability and infrastructure availability central to the upstream outlook.
Capital returns stayed elevated
Imperial generated 3.228 billion Canadian dollars in operating cash flow during the quarter, up from 1.798 billion Canadian dollars a year earlier. The company returned 2.506 billion Canadian dollars to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, including 2.086 billion Canadian dollars of repurchases. Management said the accelerated normal course issuer bid is expected to be completed before year-end, with additional surplus cash returns planned for the new year.
Imperial also declared a fourth-quarter dividend of 0.87 Canadian dollars per share. The balance between large shareholder returns and spending on refinery logistics, production reliability and lower-carbon fuel capacity will remain important for investors as commodity prices and refining margins fluctuate.
The company reported that third-quarter refinery throughput averaged 381,000 barrels per day, compared with 425,000 barrels per day a year earlier, while capacity utilization was 88 percent versus 98 percent. Unplanned downtime, the pipeline outage and planned turnaround work were the main constraints.
