- The European Commission approved Austrian state aid for Infineon's high-volume gallium nitride manufacturing project.
- The expansion is intended to move production from 200-millimeter to 300-millimeter wafers.
- The project carries conditions covering research cooperation, workforce training and potential profit sharing.
Infineon stock traded at 52.02 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:17 CET on Friday, October 30, 2026, 3.68 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29. The move came as investors assessed a European Commission decision supporting Infineon's planned gallium nitride expansion in Villach, Austria.
On October 27, the Commission approved 319 million euros in Austrian state aid for Infineon Technologies Austria AG's Empowering Fab project. The decision supports an upgrade of the existing semiconductor facility in Villach, Carinthia, and is intended to strengthen the European semiconductor supply chain.
The project will establish high-volume manufacturing of power gallium nitride, or GaN, devices on 300-millimeter wafers. The site already has 200-millimeter GaN manufacturing capabilities. The Commission described the planned facility as first of its kind in the European Union because comparable 300-millimeter power GaN capacity is not currently available in the bloc.
Why the project matters
According to the European Commission, GaN devices offer higher energy efficiency, greater power density, faster switching and more compact system designs than traditional silicon-based semiconductor devices. The technology can serve applications including artificial intelligence, energy infrastructure, electric mobility and robotics.
The Commission said the aid has an incentive effect and that Infineon would not carry out the investment in Europe without public support. It also concluded that the measure was proportionate, limited to the minimum necessary based on a funding gap, and unlikely to affect competition and trade within the EU contrary to the common interest.
Infineon Technologies Austria agreed to broaden cooperation with start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, universities and research institutions. The commitments include access to hardware and software kits and laboratory facilities, education and skills training, and sharing with Austria any project-related profits that exceed current expectations.
What investors should watch next
The aid decision improves the policy backdrop for Infineon's European manufacturing strategy, but the commercial impact depends on execution, demand for GaN power devices and the pace at which the upgraded capacity reaches production. The formal Austrian funding commitment is expected within the time limits set out after the Commission approval.
