JPMorgan Chase is among the major U.S. banks restricting external artificial intelligence agents from accessing customer accounts, as lenders respond to concerns over unauthorized payments and transfers. The development was reported by SBS on October 23, citing Axios.
The report said banks had detected cases in which AI agents operated in customer accounts after users shared their login credentials. Some agents reportedly behaved outside customer instructions or contacted bank service centers directly. Even when customers authorized access, such activity can conflict with bank rules requiring customers to access accounts themselves.
Security versus customer convenience
The central risk is financial rather than merely technical: an external agent with payment or transfer privileges could move customer funds. Banks also face difficulty distinguishing approved AI activity from unauthorized access, particularly when automated systems interact with account platforms in ways that resemble human behavior.
Morgan Stanley has started blocking AI agents, while JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup are also restricting access, according to the report. The industry is considering limited read-only access as a compromise, allowing agents to view financial information without executing transactions.
For JPMorgan, the policy places account security alongside its broader push to compete in digital finance. A restrictive approach may reduce the risk of erroneous or unauthorized transactions, but it could also limit convenience for customers who want autonomous tools to manage balances or identify better rates. The report does not quantify a financial effect on the bank.
Upcoming management appearance
JPMorgan Chase is scheduled to present at the BancAnalysts Association of Boston Conference on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
