- Lam Research posted record September-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings above analyst estimates.
- Management expects near-term supply constraints to shift some equipment shipments into the March quarter.
- Wafer-fabrication-equipment spending is expected to exceed 200 billion US dollars in 2027.
Lam Research reported record fiscal first-quarter revenue of 8.22 billion US dollars for the September quarter on October 21, while adjusted earnings per share reached 2.20 US dollars. The figures exceeded analyst estimates, according to 24/7 Wall St.
Chief Executive Tim Archer attributed the quarter's performance to strong demand from artificial intelligence and increasing chip complexity. The company makes etch and deposition equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing, leaving revenue closely tied to customer fab construction and production plans.
Guidance meets a supply bottleneck
Lam Research guided for December-quarter revenue of 8.6 billion US dollars, plus or minus 400 million US dollars, and adjusted earnings per share of 2.33 US dollars, plus or minus 0.15 US dollars. Chief Financial Officer Doug Bettinger said the revenue outlook would have been higher without near-term supply-chain constraints.
Management did not quantify the revenue affected by the bottleneck. Bettinger said some orders that cannot ship in the December quarter should move into the March quarter. Cleanroom availability is another constraint as customers bring new facilities online, while Lam also expects China's contribution to decline from 35 percent of September-quarter revenue in the December period.
The supply issue changes the near-term investment case without removing the longer-term demand signal. Lam Research expects global wafer-fabrication-equipment spending to exceed 200 billion US dollars in calendar 2027, although management said unconstrained demand would be higher. Archer said the company had visibility through 2028 but needed more time to refine the outlook around cleanroom schedules and supply availability.
For investors, the December quarter will show whether the constraint is mainly a timing issue or a more persistent limit on shipments. A rapid catch-up would support the view that demand remains stronger than near-term delivery capacity; prolonged bottlenecks would keep execution risk elevated even with a healthy order environment.

The broader S&P 500 market environment remains relevant for high-growth semiconductor equipment shares as investors weigh strong artificial-intelligence demand against capacity and valuation risks.
