Data breach raises governance questions

  • The November 19 third-quarter results are the next scheduled investor event.

Loblaw is facing a fresh governance and reputation issue after a cybersecurity breach exposed personal information linked to about two million shoppers. The company began notifying affected customers in October, and CBC News reported the details on October 23, 2026.

CBC News said the information included names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and purchase details. The specific information varied by customer. Loblaw said an unauthorized third party accessed certain personal information after suspicious activity was identified in parts of its technology systems around February 23.

Customer support does not remove exposure

As a precaution, Loblaw logged customers out of applications using its PCiD credentials, including PC Optimum, PC Express and the PC Financial portal. The company is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity restoration through TransUnion, with enrollment available until February 28, 2027.

CBC quoted privacy strategist Cat Coode as saying that monitoring offers limited protection because exposed information such as a birth date cannot be replaced. For investors, the issue extends beyond the immediate support package to customer trust, privacy controls and possible regulatory scrutiny.

Loblaw stock traded at 44.90 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 16:40 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
