Manulife has introduced an AI assistant for Canadian advisors that answers underwriting questions before an application is submitted, according to Insurewire. The report, published October 15 and based on a source dated October 14, says the tool covers life, critical illness and Synergy products in its first release.

The assistant draws on Manulife's underwriting handbooks and is available through the Advisor Portal. It is designed to help advisors understand likely requirements and gather information before client meetings, but its answers are not binding and may contain errors.

Underwriting Decisions Stay Separate

Submitted cases continue to follow Manulife's standard underwriting requirements. Final decisions remain with the insurer's underwriters and MAUDE, its automated decision engine. The assistant does not provide a binding view on insurability, premiums, coverage or the outcome of an application.

Manulife said MAUDE automatically approved 58 percent of eligible cases by December 2025, 56 percent more than before an upgrade. The figures indicate that the insurer is combining advisory automation with a separate decision process rather than handing underwriting authority to the new conversational tool.

Insurewire said Manulife cautions advisors to use professional judgment because answers can be wrong. The report also highlights an open governance question around how questions containing client health information are stored or used.

AI Ambitions Add Strategic Context

The assistant is part of a broader AI platform that Manulife says can reuse tools cleared for security, risk and governance across markets. The insurer expects AI to generate US$1 billion in cumulative enterprise value by 2027 and said it had reached US$300 million by the end of 2025.

For investors, the tool offers a measured use of AI in insurance: it may improve preparation before applications, while human underwriters retain responsibility for decisions. The commercial impact will depend on adoption, answer quality, privacy controls and whether the approach expands beyond the initial product set.
