AI expansion reshapes MediaTek's outlook

  • Third-quarter revenue exceeded guidance as smart-edge demand offset weaker mobile-phone sales.
  • Management expects strong fourth-quarter growth as the first data-center AI accelerator ramps.
  • Supply capacity and lower data-center gross margins remain key execution issues.
  • MediaTek's next monthly sales update is scheduled for November 10, 2026.

MediaTek's third-quarter results and its expanded AI accelerator outlook are shifting investor attention from mobile chips toward data-center growth. In an earnings-call report published by Investing.com, management said third-quarter revenue reached 168.06 billion NT dollars for the period ended September 30, 2026, up 18.3 percent year over year and 10.4 percent from the previous quarter.

AI becomes the next growth engine

MediaTek's first-generation data-center AI accelerator began initial shipments in September. Management expects the program to generate 2.5 billion US dollars in fourth-quarter revenue and to reach the high end of an approximately 16 billion US dollar revenue target in 2027, equivalent to about 20 percent of the AI accelerator ASIC market.

The company also said its second-generation accelerator remains on track for high-volume production in the first quarter of 2028. A separate custom ASIC project has a second customer, with initial revenue expected in 2028. MediaTek is expanding its system and rack offering through its NVLink Fusion partnership with NVIDIA.

Guidance raises execution stakes

Management expects fourth-quarter revenue of 210.1 billion to 221.8 billion NT dollars, representing sequential growth of 25 percent to 32 percent and year-over-year growth of 40 percent to 48 percent. Gross margin is forecast at 45 percent, plus or minus 1.5 percentage points, while the operating-expense ratio is expected at 26 percent, plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Smart Edge Platforms grew 63 percent year over year in the third quarter and accounted for 58 percent of revenue. Mobile-phone revenue declined 17 percent year over year and represented 37 percent of the total. The mix shows why the AI ramp matters: it can broaden MediaTek's growth profile, but data-center gross margins remain below the company average and advanced packaging and substrate capacity constrain execution.
