Mitsui & Co. reported a sharp increase in first-half earnings on Wednesday, November 4, while weaker cash generation complicated the picture for investors. The Japanese trading house raised its full-year profit forecast after net profit attributable to the company climbed 35.7 percent year on year.

According to a Yahoo Finance report citing Investing.com, profit attributable to Mitsui reached 574.9 billion yen for the six months ended September, compared with 423.7 billion yen a year earlier. Revenue increased 23.1 percent to 8.32 trillion yen, while profit before income taxes rose 29.8 percent to 709.5 billion yen.

Forecast raised despite cash pressure

Mitsui now expects full-year profit attributable to the company of 1.05 trillion yen, up from its previous forecast of 920 billion yen. The revised outlook implies growth of 25.9 percent from the prior fiscal year. The company also maintained its full-year dividend expectation at 140 yen per share, including a 70 yen year-end payment.

The higher forecast reflects stronger expected gross profit and earnings from equity-method investments, as well as improved gains from investments and asset disposals. The assumptions also include higher oil prices and a weaker yen, factors that can materially influence the earnings profile of a diversified Japanese trading house.

Cash generation was the main counterweight to the earnings increase. Operating cash flow fell 47.9 percent to 223.4 billion yen, while free cash flow declined to 23.4 billion yen from 187.6 billion yen in the comparable period. Mitsui attributed the weaker operating cash flow mainly to higher working capital, particularly trade receivables.

Core operating cash flow, which excludes working-capital movements, increased to 511.6 billion yen from 448.5 billion yen. That distinction matters for investors: the reported cash-flow decline points to near-term funding pressure, while the core measure suggests that underlying operating generation remained stronger.

Investment gains support earnings

Gains on securities and other investments rose to 118.6 billion yen from 27.5 billion yen. The increase included a valuation gain on Mitsui's remaining stake in U.S. real estate business CIM Group and a one-off profit linked to a Brazilian passenger railway subsidiary leaving the group's consolidation scope.

The Mobility, Digital & Infrastructure division posted the largest segment-level profit increase, with earnings rising to 153.7 billion yen from 102.7 billion yen. The Brazilian transaction contributed to that performance, highlighting the role of portfolio activity alongside recurring operations.
