- Nasdaq plans to add an overnight session to extend weekday trading access for US-listed equities.
- The expanded schedule includes a daily one-hour pause for processing and operational transition.
- The regular US trading session remains the reference point for price discovery.
Nasdaq is preparing to extend trading toward an overnight schedule, with the new structure designed to broaden access to US-listed equities. The plan is outlined in Nasdaq's 23/5 Trading Information Hub.
Overnight session adds market access
The planned framework adds a new session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Together with existing extended hours and the regular session, the schedule is intended to provide nearly continuous weekday trading.
Trading would pause for one hour each day between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Nasdaq says the pause is intended to support maintenance, processing and the transition between trading days, while the regular US session continues to provide the main reference for price discovery.
Next step for Nasdaq's plan
The planned launch remains an important operating milestone for Nasdaq's market-services business. Investors will be watching the implementation timetable, the final operating arrangements and how brokers make the expanded hours available to clients.
