National Australia Bank stock enters a key results test after a workforce overhaul. Management says corporate functions will bear the main impact.

Restructuring shapes the results outlook

  • NAB is reshaping its operating model while keeping its broader strategy unchanged.
  • The bank links the programme to productivity, technology investment and growth priorities.

National Australia Bank announced on 20 October that it would simplify its operating model and realign its workforce toward customer growth and technology priorities. The bank expects the changes to reduce its internal workforce by up to 2,500 roles in fiscal 2027 and materially lower its use of consultants and external contractors.

The announcement comes ahead of NAB's fiscal 2026 results on 5 November. The bank's official announcement says the measures are intended to improve productivity, risk outcomes and execution while creating capacity for business banking, deposit growth and proprietary home lending.

Costs rise before efficiency gains

NAB expects to recognise a restructuring charge of approximately 300 million Australian dollars before tax in fiscal 2027. The charge covers redundancy, redeployment and organisational redesign costs, compared with approximately 80 million Australian dollars incurred in each of fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026.

Chief Executive Andrew Irvine said the bank's ambition and strategy remained unchanged. He said the changes would reduce duplication, speed up decision-making and simplify work between teams. NAB is particularly focused on reducing corporate functions and has also made deeper changes to senior management positions. The bank said there would be no material impact on customer-facing banking roles.

Consultation with employees and the Finance Sector Union is part of the implementation process. NAB said affected colleagues would receive consultation and engagement opportunities, redeployment and reskilling opportunities, career transition support and redundancy entitlements in line with applicable obligations.

Results will define the next focus

The 5 November release is the next company-specific milestone for investors. NAB's shareholder centre lists the fiscal 2026 results announcement for that date. Investors will be looking for further detail on the fiscal 2027 cost outlook and how quickly the proposed structural changes can support productivity.
